AOP part 61: Shape and Careful Clarity on the Horns

shape horns horn tweak tilt Simon Q. Walden, FilmPhotoAcademy.com, sqw, FilmPhoto, photographyThe issues I discussed earlier about shadows merging on the black suit also applied to the headpiece. We had to do some quite fine posing to tweak the head position so that horns

In this shot we had to keep adjusting the tilt of the head by only a couple of degrees to make sure the horns were clear and separated. Look at the far horn closest to the wall, there is just enough white space to make the horn shape clear.

This is an example where a second studio strobe placed to the right hand side would have made so much difference. With a second light to the right hand side we would have had highlights running down the arms and legs giving us a much improved sense of shape.

Incidentally, when it comes to cropping an image like this go for where the legs are slightly crossed, I always look to crop at the narrowest part of the legs. This helps make the legs look thinner and longer.
