Inside a Lightbox
These giant lightboxes are used to create a portable hi-key backdrop. Normally you position them against a wall - put one or two strobes to pump light inside them. In this way you have a completely white background in quite tight spaces that is easily portable. The subject then stands in front of them with their own main light.
However, I'm misusing, or maybe re-using the lightbox in a different way. In this case I've got Suzanne inside the lightbox and the lights outside.
As you can see from the images this creates a complete wrap around light, with very limited shadows.
There is also a bonus in that the model is in a very enclosed space and that means they have a different mental attitude and new possibilities for posing.
Finally, you are forced to shoot as wide as possible, with the camera just poking through into the box.
So, the combination of an unusual light source, an unusual posing space and an unusual camera position and focal length gives you images that are quite different.
In the first image I've used the wide angle lens to exaggerate Suzanne's body length.
You can still use more conventional poses within the space and enjoy the soft, even, wrap-around lighting that is created.
Making the most of the wide angle lens to both fill the frame and create a serious sense of depth to the image.
