We recently ran another two sessions of our very popular two day studio introduction workshops that we run with the Royal Photographic Society. After each workshop every attendee can submit images for review and critique – this is a very useful and important part of the course.

This is Ian’s submission for his post-workshop critique. We offer this to all attendees as it really adds value to the workshops to have the final results thoroughly analysed.
Perfect. Loads of great definition, detail, highlights, shadows, well held tones. I even like the square crop.
Again lovely. It is slightly murky, maybe a bit of added lightness and contrast?
Can’t tell at this size, but I am a bit concerned about the eyes, it looks like one is closed and the other is open. I know she’s looking down…

This is a post workshop critique from our RPS workshop in November.
This is all a bit murky, you need to have an adjust of exposure and contrast, maybe a bit of dodging and burning to bring this to life. It is overall a little dark and a little lacking in contrast and punch.
Pose and all that is good, but the black cloth down the centre is too wide relative to the Sharon. You could have had Sharon posed slightly less head on to camera to help.

Spot on, only objection is there should be a little catchlight in the eyes, he looks a little dead. You could crop this to 8×10 portrait format for a stronger image.
Brilliant. Nothing I would change about this at all.
On a hi-res image just have a check that there are no strong highlight spots in the top right hand corner.

There are two things that really bug me about this image, firstly the curve of the bench is cropped on the right – should crop the left two I think. Secondly it looks like Cat’s only got one foot. There is an image there, crop just below the bum and tight around Cat and really boost the contrast (or the shadows at least).
Nice, one of those lovely figure studies that works well in colour or black and white – though it’s pretty much monochrome anyway. I’d like to just crop …
