Raphaella is very well known as a dance model, her moves are amazing. She is also a complete whirlwind – I’m a fast shooter and I struggled to keep up with her.
I wanted to capture that essence of whirlwind and also take some dance shots that weren’t pin-sharp but instead used the motion as part of the image.

The set is a simple mix of scaffold, metal poles, cables and assorted stuff. The light from behind are two gelled strobes – one blue, one red, shining through cardboard goboes.
Smoke is used at the back of the set to catch depth and create paths of light.

I don’t quite know how to explain a LensBaby, you probably just want to noodle over to their website. Essentially it is a deliberately out-of-focus, tilt-shift lens built for creative messing, not accuracy.
The whole point of the wibbly-wobbly tilty-shiftiness is that only portions of your image are in focus. Using it outdoors isn’t too bad, you can generally see what you are doing in the viewfinder. Using it indoors is much harder, the LensBaby has a fixed aperture, so the image looks very dark so it’s almost a random process.

Strictly speaking, this isn’t Photoshop as I use Corel’s Photo Pro. But this is about post-processing.
The first shot of Harriett Langley has had some different coloured water splashes added to the image. I thought this would be easy, but actually making the splashes look like the flowing from and around and over the body is much harder than I thought. For the colouring of the splashes I have used colours already in the image to give it some coherence.
