These always sound so easy.  Fix your camera on the tripod, take a bunch of shots with the model moving into different positions.  Whap ‘em in photoshop, mask out what you don’t need.

In practice it takes far more photoshop time than you would expect, getting things to line up properly, to take care of shadows, watching out for overlapping bits, careful trimming of cut-outs.   I shoot them enthusiastically and get really fed up with them about half-way through the post as I realise how many hours I’ve put in.

In this …

The intent behind these first two images is to layer the cloth or clothes over the nude image, to give a controlled sense of translucency to the materials.

In the top image with the golden drapes I’m very pleased with this effect, it is as I pre-visualised it.

We recently ran another two sessions of our very popular two day studio introduction workshops that we run with the Royal Photographic Society.   After each workshop every attendee can submit images for review and critique – this is a very useful and important part of the course.

This is Ian’s submission for his post-workshop critique.  We offer this to all attendees as it really adds value to the workshops to have the final results thoroughly analysed.

Perfect.   Loads of great definition, detail, highlights, shadows, well held tones.  I even like the square crop.

Again lovely.   It is slightly murky, maybe a bit of added lightness and contrast?

Can’t tell at this size, but I am a bit concerned about the eyes, it looks like one is closed and the other is open.  I know she’s looking down…

On any picture if …

This is a post workshop critique from our RPS workshop in November.

This is all a bit murky, you need to have an adjust of exposure and contrast, maybe a bit of dodging and burning to bring this to life.   It is overall a little dark and a little lacking in contrast and punch.

Pose and all that is good, but the black cloth down the centre is too wide relative to the Sharon.   You could have had Sharon posed slightly less head on to camera to help.

Lighting comments as above.

The big …
