Whenever I start a shoot I always take a "test" shot.   I tell the client this is a test of my lighting, but what it actually does is let me quietly examine their facial structure before continuing with the shoot.

So, I get in real close, basically just a head, not shoulders, no background.

Firstly, this does genuinely check my lighting and exposure, I can check the histogram if I need to.

Secondly, this gives me a really tight crop on the face where I can check for bent noses, different size eyes, awkward fringes, lopsided smiles.   I can do this quietly but thoroughly without having to stare at the client like they are some prize cattle I’m about to buy.

So, use that first shot – use it wisely
