Workshop Critique for Richard Awbery

At every workshop I run, attendees can always send me images after the workshop for review. This of course allows photographers to do the appropriate post-processing on their images and also to consider what they felt worked well and where they feel they want some further advice.

All the images in this item are copyright 2009 Richard Awbery,

There are some really terrific images in this set. You've done a really excellent job in my opinion. From being thrown in at the deep end and having to make the most of your allotted time I think you've created a very diverse folio of images.

Well Done!!

Sorry, this is a duffer. The capture is ok, but the pose is just wrong - too vertical, legs not stretching right, face strained, and the angle is wrong, but apart from that....

It's those hands. I can see why you chose this image, because Cat looks very cheeky and connected to the viewer, but I'm really not sure about those hands.

Smashing! Great crop, light, pose, expression, really distinctive image.

It's just slightly burnt out on her shoulder on the right, I don't know if you can just get a little hint of that back from the raw file. Otherwise this is lovely.

After all that posing we did with the arm I'm not sure in the end.... It is a lovely delicate image though. There's a little too much dark on the left and not enough on the right.

The eyes are possibly just turned too far - there's an awful lot of white in her eyes and her irises are nearly lost. Just a very slight turn of the head would have helped, but then we were both looking at her hands instead.

Really lovely colour scheme, light and tonality on this.

It would be really good shot except that the waist looks very big. I think that's partly where the arms fall, but maybe a longer lens would have helped as well.

You might be able to warp this into shape in photoshop, but the arm is going to make it difficult getting it to look right.

Aaagghh, that big blobby hand in the middle of the frame!! The top half is ok. Overall though it lacks sharpness, rather than looking deliberately soft.

Not sure about the fingers, would have been better if they were together. Quite like the warm tone on this one, though the light leaves it a little flat - was this done without flash presumably.

Slightly niggly is that the tiles aren't true and square to the frame.

Overall though I think my trouble with this shot is it's either too tightly cropped or not cropped anything like enough.

For a figure in the environment it really needs more environment I feel.

Not as strong as the next one, like the colour work though, that dark and moody processing.

Also really like "The Cat" appearing above her. Don't know who else noticed that.

Absolutely terrific, love the crop., the colours, the tones. Even like the hand in this one - normally I'd look for a more delicate hand, but it works in this image.

The crop just to the curve of the hip is perfect

Terrific shot apart from a wrinkly elbow. Just a hint more bend in the elbow would have lost that.

Hey, those colours work really well, lovely stripy effects, the lighting on the face is really interesting too. The right hand background needs darkening down.

This is very hard, because it has everything going for it, but it doesn't look right and I'm not really sure why not.

It might be - the blue on her foot is too bright, the right hand is in shadow so she looks unsupported, the angle of the pose, the crop too tight.

I wonder if you could crop much closer in either just below or above the elbow.

Lovely shot - the light in her eye, the shape of her body, the way the bust is just revealed, the hand to the face, great circular composition that leads round and round the image. Absolutely perfect separation of the figure and the background in this low key shot.

Nice choice of sepia processing too.

Brilliant.

There's a glitch in the background bottom left that needs cleaning. That's it.

Crop is terrific, treatment is terrific.

If this stands to being blown up as well I think you've got an excellent image.
