Post workshop image critique for Alan

Alan attended one of our recent Art Nude workshops. Attendees from every workshop may send me images for a follow-up critique such as this one.

We start off with two versions of the same image. When selecting your images for anything you do need to be decisive - I know it can be difficult when flipping between colour and mono - but ultimately your eye or gut will tell you which one is best.

We also have a very strong sepia tone, which I don't like, at this strength it just looks poorly faux vintage. A warm tone is good in a monochrome, but it needs to be much more subtle than this.

Again two versions, but here it is clear the mono version is so much stronger. In mono the shadow - and definition created by it - reveals Artemis' figure perfectly. This is just slightly hot on the light on the chest, a little local tweaking would sort that out. The rest is nicely exposed.

Not quite the same image, but the same comments apply.

In both images I'm bothered by the somewhat aggressive pose, but with a non-aggressive expression, the posture is relaxed throughout. When setting a shot like this direct the model into thinking through an emotion that fits with the pose.

Not keen on the nearly no-saturation version, it's left Leah looking anaemic rather than subtle.

So close with this shot, the pose, the skin and of course the shoes!! Capture is great (though lighting from the right and less soft would have given more punch). But it's the eyes, to me they are just too closed, with any shot, the eyes have to be right or the shot is lost.

Cracking shot, strong, dynamic, expression fits the pose, fits the background.

Brilliant image of Jon, perfectly capturing his wonderful face. The lighting control in all the greys is terrific though the bright spot on his nose could do with reducing just slightly.

Absolutely smashing. detail, texture, softness, gaze - perfect.

Not as strong, the fingers are distracting and it is rather oddly positioned in the frame. You could maybe fill the white with further blacks or maybe crop it tighter, but it doesn't have the same strength as the first picture.
