THINKING:
To finish off this short segment I want to mention briefly the media and its relationship with body image.
Everyday women are bombarded with made-up, airbrushed and photoshopped artificial depictions of "reality". When this deluge of body programming is so intense it is no surprise that body image has become such an issue.
This image shows a woman's ultimate frustration and despair with this media programming.
SEEING:
A simple dark background allows the flying papers to show clearly. A busy background would not have allowed the pages to stand out properly.
The expression and anger in the "pose" is crucial. This is not a held pose, but a frozen moment of NikiMarie actually throwing papers.
It is important to actually go through the actions required of the final "pose". Without making the actual moves then the body position cannot possibly be right since it would not show the shifting in muscles as they move.
For models, pulling off a convincing emotional face is much easier when they are actually acting out.
DOING:
Shot in studio with flash to freeze most of the motion, but you will notice there is some motion blur in the papers. That is fine for this image since there has to be a sense of motion to the image.
In practice it was hard to throw all the pages and not have them fall in the wrong places so there is a little montage work here just to fill the space.
