AOP part 22: 9 Compositional Elements

background thirds soft scheme rule Simon Q. Walden, FilmPhotoAcademy.com, sqw, FilmPhoto, photographyThis shot gives me a great example to talk about a number of compositional elements in one image.

Colour scheme: the pale blue background pushes the warmer tones of skin forward with clear separation of subject to background.

2) Colour scheme: the blues in the background correspond to the much stronger blues in the corset and neck brace.

3) Frame with a frame: the frame of door and the grotty wall behind it give a very strong frame within a frame - shame the edges are so bright.

4) Symmetry: the strong, central pose emphasises the subject.

5) Dynamic lines: the two arms, running cross ways and diagonally break the image, returning some dynamic to the image and with the only diagonal line leading to the splayed fingers.

6) Soft light: or more specifically soft shadows, give a proper sense of three dimensions to Maja. A more frontal lighting would have made her look flat.

7) Small working space: that is just a door Maja is posing in front of, you really don't need much to make a useful and workable background.

8) Crop: just above the knees making the legs look as long as possible without including the knees - which would have required I include the feet.

9) Rule of thirds: the eyes are on the rule of thirds, right were they should be.
