I just wanted to comment on the many videos that are now turning up on the web using the 5D as the video camera and some of them are just brilliant.
Ignoring the content, just looking at the visual quality. The combination of big lens choice (usually wide aperture, low depth of field choice), the sharpness of these lenses compared to typical video cameras and the low-light shooting capability means you can create some stunning material.

Sorry, I’m not going to show you how…

Ignoring the content, just looking at the visual quality. The combination of big lens choice (usually wide aperture, low depth of field choice), the sharpness of these lenses compared to typical video cameras and the low-light shooting capability means you can create some stunning material.

We recently shot a small commercial promo for office space using it, nothing complicated but again the images were perfect out of the box.

I have to say at the moment – I would still use a videographer (as for the shoot above) to do any real shooting, rather than a photographer who has a video-cam.

Why?

Well, videographers have a different eye for things, its not just simple composition, but all the other stuff, follow-through focus, pull-focus, when to steady-cam, when to wobble-cam. How the overall flow and narrative works and which different elements will need to be recorded to make a final video. It is not the same as simple, framed, still images.

On the other hand, we’ll be producing fashion catwalk style materials for a client shortly that will be shot with a locked off camera – they will make direct web clips. So it’s all simple and no “video eye” required.

So having described the setting fire to the dress sequence, here’s the drowning the dress sequence. This was a trial run before doing a real shoot for a client – and to be honest this was the one I was more concerned about because I know cloth in water can be a real pain.

Lou and I went to a local canal off the beaten path. The look I was going for was very moody – almost fashion. Throughout the sequence I’m using a speedlite – which in this case is mounted on top of the camera, which I’m flipping on and off throughout the shoot so there’s some flash, some without.

You can see the effect the flash has had on the gown, really bringing out a sheen and texture with the sun providing a great rim and hair light.

All the time I was coaching Lou through thoughts and emotions for her to act too, mostly around the theme of being depressed and suicidal!!

And here is where it went wrong. As you can see it’s really quite difficult to keep the dress floating above the water (once the air inside it has gone) and it’s also very difficult for Lou to. No matter what you think, bodies do not float in the water as you think they should.

And here’s our now drowned Lou out of the water again.

The next thing was to get her changed (though in the end Lou refused to wear anything except my dressing gown – no way was she going to get her clothes wet and smelly) and we rushed back so Lou could shower and scrub off.

By the way, I don’t want you to think we weren’t having fun.

Sorry for lack of posts, but I’ve been working flat-out on the build 12-14 hours a day – it’s quite time consuming and completely exhausting. I would have loved to have got contractors in to do the work, but that would have tripled my costs – way beyond my budget.

There’s also something very satisfying about being able to say “I made this”

There’s also something very satisfying about being able to say “I made this”

Walls like glass

The only specialist I expect to use are a plasterer to skim the walls – who is half way through and is absolutely amazing. Firstly he is extremely fast. But the walls feel like glass when you run your hands over them – gob-smacking.

The other guy will be somebody to fit all the locks to the doors – I could, just about, do this but it’s ever so fiddly and an expert will do it quicker and better fitting than I ever will.

Anyway, back to the question.

How much timber does it take?

So far, we have used over 1 kilometre of cut timber and 4 tennis courts worth of boards!!

We haven’t finished the coves yet and I keep coming up with last minute tweaks, but that is a huge amount of wood and board.

Screws? Well difficult to say, but I’m over the 2,000 mark (no nails anywhere).

It gets worse, that little lot adds up to at least 3 tonnes and I’ve moved it all at least once and most of it two or three times because it’s always in the wrong place !!
