AOP part 62: Outfit Determines the Shot

When looking at fashion photography you need to work out what is crucial about the outfit and how you will present it.

If it is a winter coat then you want to imply how it keeps you warm and cosy - you may use a pose that brings the hands up to the collars as though keeping a chill wind away.

If it is a casual outfit then maybe it needs a more lifestyle environment, lounging in a comfy chair.

For an outfit like this with lots of detail we need to bring the detail forward. In fact we've got two different parts of the outfit. The leggings are cut so that that latex sticks out from the outfit. At the same time in the halter we have all those lovely criss-cross patterns.

A standing full length shot would not have done justice to either so instead we work a pose that brings both forward. The knees bend to camera - with the hands down on the leg to bring attention to the leggings.

Meanwhile, the chest is thrust forwards with the halter straps all crisp and clear.

As is common in fashion work, the gaze is off camera, that makes it more about the clothes and less of a portrait. This allows the viewer to see themselves as the subject.
